Not long ago I was chatting with someone whose locker had been broken into at their gym.
Five thousand dollars worth of personal possessions were stolen.
5 Grand!
Among the items stolen:
-
one laptop
-
a fleece jacket
-
Chanel glasses - the frames alone cost $700
-
a camera phone
-
wrist watch
-
cash
This made me take a quick count of how much I’d lose if my backpack were stolen with all three phones, my laptop, camera and mini-camcorder in it. And what if my cash and credit cards were in there too?
When I was 18 I carried a paper notebook, my wallet and a hair comb in my bag.
No credit cards, no cell phone, no electronics, and frankly not many worries.
Imagine Walkmans were not even out yet.
Everyone have a wonderful day & hang onto your bag!

OMG! FIVE Grand!! But, then again, when I think about what I carry around with me these days…it IS pretty amazing when you add it all up. But then again, I don’t think I can do without anything either…I need my glasses, camera, cell phone, wallet, credit cards, etc…….it was much easier back in the seventies, wasn’t it?

Very good point! Between my cell phone, mp3 player, digital camera, sunglasses (mine are prescription and Burberry), and debit/credit cards (I never have cash on me, it’s a bad habit, I know), and whatever random other bits and pieces I have with me, if my purse was stolen, I’d be out a small fortune too. Not $5k though, but still, enough to make me cry for sure! YIKES.

For me it wouldn’t be the monetary loss so much as the loss of convenience! I would be up a creek if I lost my cell phone, I just realized I don’t even know my husband’s cell phone number because I use speed dial.
Ouch! I feel for that person - that was a lot to lose.

Five Grand? $700 glasses? Geez!
I’m too cheap (and too prone to lose things) to carry that much expensive stuff around with me. Let’s see…my keys, my cell, debit card sometimes I bring my camera, but the Baby is always in my pocket or the Beast doesn’t get out of my sight.
I hope she had insurance.

5K sounded like a lot until I started adding up what’s in my backpack. Since I have a specialized prescription (one lense is 700$, the other 300$ - I’ve been reusing the same frames for years) my eyeglasses alone would be around 1K. Add my laptop, extra batteries, etc. (2.5K), and epipen (100$) and I’m already over the 3,500$ mark before I even stop to include the remaining staples such as cell phone and iPod (which includes about 350$ worth of iTunes music on it). It doesn’t take very long at all to rack up a few grand worth of belongings and drag them about with us without even realizing it. No wonder I’ve always locked my backpack into the trunk of my vehicle. Here’s to hoping that doesn’t get stolen!
