Every elementary, middle and high school would have a free afterschool program. This way kids wouldn’t be home alone, or hanging out on street corners while parents were at work. The kids would have access to computers and sports equipment, as well as tutoring.
-
All higher education would be free.
-
It would be required that every kid graduating high school be able to pass a basic math test without the use of a calculator. Basic math = being able to add several three and four digit numbers, knowing how to balance a checkbook and make change.
-
Libraries would have extended hours and be open seven days a week.
-
Every newspaper would have a good news page.
-
Kids would admire teachers as much as they do sports heroes.
-
AIDS medications and all birth control products would be totally free.
-
Credit card companies wouldn’t be allowed on college campuses - too many kids ending up in debt and/or becoming adults in debt.
-
People running for office would have limits on how much could be spent on their campaigns.
-
Children would begin learning a second language in first grade.

I am with you 100% on your aims and ambitions here. You clearly suffer the same problems as we do in the UK. The teaching of unaided basic maths is to my mind essential. It horrifies me that kids leaving school have no mental arithmatic skills whatsoever. They come to me for bartending jobs, yet can’t add the prices of two drinks together in their heads.
I like the good news idea. Unfortunately we have an unsatiable appetite for bad news. Good news just don’t sell papers!
Interesting post . Thankyou

a great list - all these things should be implemented.
I could have use some those things - never quite learn how to balance a check book and I would have love to have learn a second language that soon..

Wow..if you were in charge the world would be a better place. If I were in charge, there would be things like, animal cruelty gets you the death penalty, and I always get the perfect parking spot. People would probably hate me being in charge.
good choices on your part!
