Can you watch a movie already in progress, or do you need to see it from the beginning?

When I was in my teens New York still had a few of the old retro movie houses left.  I loved nothing better than going to the Thalia or Theatre 80 to see classic & cult films.  They often ran double features.  I usually missed the first film because I worked till 9pm with my dad.

One night I was sitting on the counter reading when my dad said, “I thought you were going down Broadway to see those Bette Davis movies.  Waste of money you could watch them on the late late show for free you know.”

“The first one already began, I’m waiting till it’s time for the second.”

“Why?”

“Well, uh ’cause I missed the beginning.”

“Frannie the second half is the best part of the show.  You’ll catch up with what’s going on, and you get to see what happens in the end.  And isn’t it the same price if you see one or two?”

“Same price.”

“So what are you still doing here?”

You know he was right.  I ended up seeing quite a few half films over the years.  Eventually they all did appear on the late late show, and I caught the first halves too.  The TV screen, however could never compare to seeing them on the big screen.

  1. Frances, I can’t watch a movie I’ve never seen before from the middle. I can make exceptions for some made for tv movie…if I’m sitting at home and it happens to be on the tv in the background or something…but otherwise, I just can’t do it. It goes along with everything else I do…I have to start things at the beginning…I’m a bit OCD that way.

Movies I’ve already seen I can watch in halves or whatnot…that’s not a problem. ;-)
