I was on the subway thinking about how I would go about choosing today’s ‘giver.’ Google searches made earlier in the evening did not yeild much, and I racked my brain on the train trying to bring a generous soul up on my mind’s screen.
A craving for butternut squash soup took me to a local eatery. When dining alone I usually hoist myself on a barstool, so I won’t take up a table.
On the bar was a copy of the Post. Who knows? Maybe it would yield a candidate. Sure enough one turned up on page three.
Mohammad Sohail is a deli owner in Long Island, New York. One day a man brandishing a baseball bat tried to rob him. Mohammad drew his gun, and the would be thief was on his knees begging for his life.
He asked Mohammad to spare him, that he was desperate for money to feed his family. Mohammad was so touched, that he let the man go with 40 dollars & a loaf of bread.
The story made the papers and all the news shows. Today Mohammad made the news again. The thief sent him a note of thanks and 50 dollars.
He wrote that his life had been changed because of what Mohammad did. He had a good job, was taking care of his family, and had become a devout Muslim like Mohammad.
A photo of the simply typed note appeared with the article. Even the hardest heart could not be touched by it.
God Bless you Mohammad.
And I am sure he will be donating that fifty to the mosque.
