Discovering New Blogs

Today has no topic but a fun exercise in discovering new blogs. This was Frances’ suggestion:
go to a blog we read regularly & from their blogroll, go to another blog, and from that blog go to another via that blog’s blogroll repeating the steps till we have 7 blog links – 1 we know well and 6 others we discovered because we went exploring. Here goes:

A blog that I regularly read – Selma In The City – as I said in my previous post, Selma is one talented lady. She has many blogrolls but my eyes just went to the Canadian blogger blogroll for some reason.

From Selma’s Canadian Bloggers blogroll, I came to this blog – From Nat’s Brain

I find this blog to be full of humor, music and a little bit of everything. I think I’ll come back to visit soon.

And from that blog’s blogroll – Groovebunny

I click on this blog because of the name – groovebunny…deep thoughts, limited vocabulary. I”m always fascinated by names bloggers choose for their blogs. Groovebunny hasn’t update her blog since September of last year. But there is humor here and tales of work and personal things which most bloggers write about. I might check back here to see if there’s any updates.

And I came to here -  Mr. Lugubrious

Another humorous blog which I like but it’s too bad Mr. L hasn’t update in awhile.

And here – Last Girl on Earth

Last Girl on Earth is Deni Bonet, a musician who sounds like a bit like Pat Benatar and Debbie Harry.  Humorous posts and music. And also another blogger not updating their blog. Fun fact- Bonet toured with Cyndi Lauper (one of my favorite singers) and is on the DVD, At Last, which I happened to own.

And here – Kross-Eyed Kitty

Another blogger that hasn’t update their blog since 2009 and also another humorous blog. I seem to come across these a lot and strangely enough, these are the blogs that attracts me the most.

And finally here – Interrupted Wanderlust

I love the name -  Interrupted Wanderlust. The blogger, Kristi, writes with an easy directness and some humor.

That’s it for our 7 day experiment. I think it’s a great experience in not only sharing thoughts but sharing parts of ourselves since we post with the same topics in mind. Even though this doesn’t make me like wordpress any more than before (which wasn’t much), I still find it an rewarding experience. I had trouble posting photos and adjusting the sizes. But one thing that I learn is, there is no difference which platform you use to blog, it’s all the same. Plus I found out a few new things about Frances.

Three All-Time Favorites Books

Today’s topic is “Three all-time favorites books and three that we want to read.” I really don’t have three all-time favorites books. I consider every book that I read something to treasure and at least something that enjoyed reading. But if I have to choose, I guess these three would be it:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
I would say Jane Eyre is my all-time favorite of all favorites. I’ve read it way back in high school but then re-read it later and really loved it. Even now, I think it’s one of the only book that I owned that I would never give away. I have two copies – a small paperback and a large hardcover – White’s Fine Edition. For me, I rather prefer the Rochester character and his complex personality but Jane Eyre has a certain flair and I like her independent spirit.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby
(translated from the French by Jeremy Leggatt)
I read this last year and it really stuck with me. I think the mind is so complex that it can create whole new universe within but at the same time it can torture us in various ways. Though I can never know how Bauby felt in those times, this book certainly open up my thoughts on the subject of the mind verses the body. The mind will always win somehow but without the body, it’s an incomplete thing. I don’t quite know what this book means to me except that I feel a strong sense of sorrow and hope in Bauby’s words. I even wrote a short fiction piece inspired by this book here.

The Bonesetter’s Daughter by Amy Tan
I love that Tan’s stories aren’t just about traditions and how the past shaped our lives but also about the importance of relationships and family. I was introduced to Tan with her first book, The Joy Luck Club, which has a similar theme of exploring mother/daughter relationships. I read The bonesetter’s daughter a few years ago and really like it. Not to say I can relate to the book but there are moments and situations that are like other families and we can also relate to those.

The three that I want to read are:

Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens
I saw the mini-series and really love the character of Amy/Little Dorrit. I’ve never read a Dickens novel before so I think this one will be not only a challenging read but also it helps me to understand the difference between the film version and the book. I actually have the book and started a few pages but somehow got into doing other things and forgot about it. But I hope to finish reading it before the end of the year or at least part of it.

Emily’s Ghost by Denise Giardina
I didn’t really like Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights but I like the mystery of Heathcliff and Catherine. Emily’s Ghost is about Emily Bronte and her suitor, William Weightman. I have always been curious about writers and their inspirations. So this could be a great read.

The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James

I love the first few lines of The Portrait of a Lady:  “Under certain circumstances there are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea. There are circumstances in which, whether you partake of the tea or not – some people of course never do – the situation is in itself delightful. Those that I have in mind in beginning to unfold this simple history offered an admirable setting to an innocent pastime.” That’s pretty much why I want to read this. Again, I have not read any Henry James but this was recommended to me and I’m sure I’ll enjoy reading it if I ever got around to it. I still have a long list of books that I want to read and it’s always growing.

Reasons why I love/started your blog

Today’s topic is “reasons why I love/started my blog.” I love blogging and the freedom to post whatever I like without having to consult anyone. There are many reasons why I started my blog(s) but mostly they are outlets for my various creative selves. I love taking photos, writing fiction & poetry and draw. I still consider all my blogs as hobbies or side projects. Even though it seem I might just steer myself into a career with one of them, I don’t know if that’s the direction I would want to go. Below in picture form are reasons why I started my blog(s):

a place for all the things that I captured with my camera

a place to showcase some of my drawings and creative projects (above are two of my favorite drawings that I have done and yes, I love placing umbrellas in my drawings)

a place to share my writings and my love of fiction and poetry

Here’s a poem that I wrote a while back that sort of says why I blog:

it was only yesterday I misplaced my thoughts
they flew themselves here onto this blog
blossoming into new words and images
captured only for a small moment in time
but lasted long enough to be read by someone

Finding Joy

Today’s topic-free and we can post whatever we like. I decided to write a piece of fiction and also joining Three Word Wednesday. The three words are occur, ragged, tidy. I know the ending is a bit lame but somehow I couldn’t seem to write a different one. I hope you enjoy this little piece of fiction. I titled it “Finding Joy” but I am not sure of the title but it will do for now.

……………………..

Sofia’s eyes veered toward the boy just as she drove by. Her sneaker-clad foot pressed down on the brake firmly. She dashed out her car wearing a pink pajama top and white jogging pants. Her sneakers made a squeaky sound as she stopped in front of the boy.

The rain has left just a few moments ago. But it still clung to the pavements and the trees. His ragged, zebra-pattern pajamas caught a bit of rain but he was not soaked. He wore yellow rain boots over his pajama pants. The gentle wind swerved his curly gold hair about. He appeared too tidy to be without a home. Looking at him, at his long lashes and his clean skin, Sofia thought he might as well fell from the sky.

The boy sleeps as if it’s the most normal thing in the world. He was perhaps eight or nine. Sofia couldn’t believed her eyes. It was almost four in the morning and the road was clear of creatures of the night. If she wasn’t an insomniac, she might have never encountered him.

Looking down at the boy, Sofia wished she could be like him – asleep without a care in the world. She hasn’t had a good night sleep for almost a month now. She can’t even remember if she ever dreamt at all.

She searched around her for signs of life but there was no one. There was just her, the boy and her car. She checked her watch again – 4:10. She didn’t want trouble and she definitely didn’t want this kind of trouble. She wished she had stayed home. She looked at the boy again and without thinking, she picked him up and placed him in the back seat of her car. By the time she got to her house and laid him down on the couch, she didn’t have a chance to change her mind.

He didn’t wake, not even when construction work next door started in the early morning hour. Sofia checked to see if he was still breathing. She envied him – to sleep like that. She ran a hand  through his hair. It was soft, like cotton. She pulled the blanket higher to his chin. She wondered what it is like to be a mother.

By the time Sofia has to go to work, he was awake and sitting upright on the couch. Sofia didn’t know what to do. She has always been awkward around kids and now with this kid, she felt even more awkward. She offered him cereal but he didn’t know what that was. She decided to make him scrabbled eggs. He ate it with delight. He told her his name is David without being asked.

She didn’t want to leave him by himself and yet she couldn’t take him to work with her. What can she do? She called her boss and told him she needed to take a personal day. He reluctantly agreed but insisted that she works tomorrow.

All day, Sofia chased David around her house. It was the most fun she had in years. If her mother could see her, she would be speechless. Since last month, after Sofia turned thirty-five, her mother has been constantly nagging her about marriage and kids. But Sofia never quite know how to answer and so she always shrugged her mother’s word away. It was easier not to think about it.

Sofia instantly knew she wanted to have kids right at the moment when David looked at her with his adoring blue eyes. She drifted through the rest of the day in a dream-like state and wished David could be hers. How can such an idea occur to her? David can’t be hers. He has a family and she must return him to them. While David was napping, Sofia kneeled by the couch and watched.

A bright light appeared in front of her.  A woman all dressed in white and glowing like a candle materialized. Her gold hair descended down her back like waves of sunshine. Her large green eyes seemed to light up like the stars. Sofia jumped up and wrapped herself around David. She turned to the woman and then David, then to the woman. There’s something about the woman that was similar to David.

The woman introduced herself as the goddess of love, Areia. She is David’s mother and has come to take him home. Sofia turned to David and tears started to spill from her eyes. She knew David would leave her soon but it’s too soon. All day Sofia had wished David has no family and that he would stayed with her.  The goddess reassured her that Sofia will see him again some day. Sofia knew this to be true. She felt it even as Areia took David into her arms.

Areia then showed Sofia an image of a man with dark beard and blue eyes. “This is your true love,” Areia said. Sofia laughed. She did not believed her. It’s all an illusion she thought. Areia smiled gently and patted Sofia on the shoulder. Then she and David vanished.

Sofia laughed and laughed, thinking she must be dreaming. But how could she be dreaming when she can’t even sleep? She suddenly felt light-headed and could not keep her eyes open.

She didn’t know she has been sleeping until she woke up on the side of the road. A man with a dark beard and blue eyes lifted her off the ground. He seemed determined to help her get home. He told her his name is David. Sofia felt speechless. This man whom she was destined to be with, looked at her with his adoring eyes and she knew and finally realized she has found her joy.

Things to do before the year is out

Today’s topic is “Things to do before the year is out.” There are only a few things that I would like to finish before 2010. I don’t like to set goals, make plans or resolutions. I think it just adds pressure to rush to the finish line. I was a late starter. Even when I start projects early, I always seem to barely make the deadline. Sometimes I even miss the deadline and has to make up for it. When I think of all those unfinished projects, I wonder if I should have started them at all. But if I don’t start, how would I know if I want to finish? Below is just a few things that I would like to finish but I’m not sure if I need to finish before the end of the year.

books
Finish reading all those books that I brought but didn’t read
I have a long list of to-read books but somehow reading hasn’t been in my schedule.  I barely finish one chapter and somehow I get distracted to do other things. I would especially like to read those photography books that I keep meaning to read. Perhaps it would be easier if I stop buying books.

camera lens

Learn to really use my SLR camera - which I think it will be a life-long goal
I’ve been using my point and shoot and somehow never got around to really using my Nikon SLR camera. I had it for a couple of years now but still haven’t quite got around to learning how to use all the buttons and settings.  I have taken a couple of really great photos with it. But that’s about it.

Finish at least one of the novel that I started writing
I would definitely like to finish one or two novels that I started. It’s always a challenge and a chase to the finish line. Even if I don’t finish, I can at least, get the story out. I might do this in November so I can participate in NaNoWriMo.

I wish there were more but I’m was never a planner and I can never quite see the future like other people. Whenever people ask how I see myself in five years, I never could come up with any answer. I suppose if there’s any new things coming my way, I couldn’t escape it.

Anyway, I decided to post a piece of fiction entitled, Solace. It is part of a novel that I worked on during NaNoWriMo in 2008. Even though I finished the story, I never got around to do any editing. But I’ve always like this part and so I thought I posted here.

Solace

Grace woke up in the middle of the night, sitting in bed in the darkness. Her mind grew blank, unsure why she woke up. She wandered to the kitchen, yearning for tea but as she listened to the water pouring into the kettle, she stopped. She didn’t want tea after all. She left the kettle on the burner.

She sat herself down on one of the wooden chairs and just stared at the moonlight dancing on the shiny, mahogany kitchen table.  Her mind drifted off to uncharacteristic thoughts of sailing the sea. She couldn’t fathomed the reason why that came to her. Only that it was their favorite past time. He often took her on his small boat but she was always afraid of falling into the water and drowning without any one to rescue her.

The moon drifted away as the morning sun lighted up the kitchen. She sat there unmoving, wondering why she hasn’t gone back to bed. The sun fell on her, heating the back of her neck. She had been motionless for a while now still dressed in her pink nightgown.  When she started to move her legs, she realized she had developed a cramp. She looked up at the clock on the kitchen wall which had stopped at midnight.

It was the exact time that Aaron had left her. Right in between the big hand and the small hand while she slept silently dreaming of their future.  He packed his belongings in a duffle bag and instead of taking the truck, he had called for a taxi. He took it straight to the airport all the way to meet his mistress. All the while never once looking back. She had waken to the hallow sound of her beating heart. She knew even before she awakes, he had left. For someone older, more mature than she. It seem so ironic to her since he always prided on marrying someone so young as her.

All he left was a folded piece of paper, ripped from one of her date books, with “I’m sorry” written in his scrawny script. He didn’t even gave a reason or signed his full name. Instead it was just the letter “A” at the bottom almost looking like an “O.”  She crawled back into bed then, unable to cope with his leaving. That was two months ago. She still sleeps on her left side, unable to move any closer to the center of the bed.

Judging by the shadows on the table created by the sun now, she can tell it wasn’t lunch time yet.  She reminded herself many times to buy a new clock but she always forgets. So it always stopped working now and then. She couldn’t remember why she woke up so soon or why she still sit there with her legs cramping up, now with pins and needle shooting up and down.

Perhaps it was nothing, she thought as she got up to get dress. Sunday was always the easiest for her. She can be lazy and it would be justifiable to her and anyone who care to know.

In the closet mirror, she discovered a small streaks of white hair on top of her head. How had that happened?  Wasn’t it just yesterday she was still a brunette and just a week ago celebrated her twenty second birthday?  Yet, she could not easily dismiss it as she would like before. She slowly combed out her hair, blending the white with the dark.  She was certain stress had caused it. Or maybe she got old without her knowing. She set the comb on the dresser and went about her day as usual.

Bloggers I would like to meet in person

Today’s topic is “Bloggers you would like to meet in person.” I like mostly writing/fiction/poetry, photography and humor blogs. Those are the ones that attracts me the most. All of them are run by wonderful bloggers who takes their time in posting about things that makes me laugh, teaches me and occasionally changes my mind about many, many things. I am always stuck by their kindness and their appreciation of life.

There are many, many bloggers that I would like to make friends with in person but I haven’t the guts. I’m indecisive about many things and this is one of them. But let’s imagine that I am willing to meet these people. While you’re at it, pretend Queen‘s Somewhere over the rainbow is playing in the background (it’s one of my favorite interpretation of that song).

So, who are these that I might like to meet and make friends with? It would be a long list if I have the time to go through my blogroll but I don’t have that kind of time or patience so I am going to list a few in no particular order. And if it sounds like I am endlessly praising them, it’s because I admire each and every one of them. Please visit these wonderful bloggers and tell them I send you. (And, sorry for my excessive use of the word, wonderful.)

Sarah at Knitting the Wind

I don’t have a very good memory so I don’t know quite sure when I discovered Sarah’s blog but I’m pretty sure I’ll be visiting her blog even if she just writes one word post. That is how much I like her writing and I’m not just talking about her wonderful poetry. She just puts words together in such a wonderful way that even if she writes about the most ordinary things, it always sounds so melodic to me. And I love the phrase, “Knitting the wind.”

Selma at Selma In The City

I just love Selma’s sense of humor, her sense of self and her writing style. Her fictions are well written. Sometimes they take you into whole new worlds. I like that she is honest about her emotions and her life.

Wicked H at Avert Your Eyes

I love Wicked’s sense of humor. I like humor blogs a lot and will gladly visit Wicked’s blog any time I need a good laugh or a reminder when things gets a bit too stress.  And she was the first blogger to allow me to design her blog without much hesitation. I am thankful that she is still using the design and that she actually liked it.

Chris at A Brighter Touch of Haze

Even though Chris doesn’t blog as much, I still find him and his blog fascinating. He’s a musician, which I admired greatly because I can’t play any instruments whatsoever. I first ‘met’ him through Selma’s blog and find his music so poetic and quite sweet. He’s also a chef and from his cooking blog, he seems like a professional to me. And if I have the nerve, I would ask for guitar and cooking lessons from him.

Carrie at Koehmstedt

I throughly admired Carrie. She is a designer and a mom. I don’t know if I should say, graphic designer but I think that might be more accurate. Her blog designs are just so wonderful and I always like the colors she uses. Carrie is a fan of Twilight which I can never be a fan of but I think that shows there is more to her than just being a mom and a designer. Plus she has such a great sense of humor.

Abraham/Speculator at La Vie Graphite

I greatly admired Abraham’s words. Every post he writes seems to be fill with some deep understanding of the human spirit or the human will. His words might seems to be ordinary at first, a second read will greatly change that. He has a great infinity in putting his thoughts together. I find I would always find more to think about when I read his blog.

Mmm at Hot Toast & Jam

Mmm just recently took over Create Tuesday which I started but didn’t quite put enough effort into it because of time. Mmm was kind enough to take over which he bestowed the new name, Creative Tuesdays. He made Creative Tuesdays so much better and I really admire him for his ability to get people not only to participate but to really encourage them to share and create. I don’t know much about Mmm but from his blogs and his words, I think he is kind gentleman who is quite a creative creature. His illustrations are just wonderful.

Frances at Blogjem

Even though Frances is my photo buddy at The Daytrippers, I’ve never met her. I think it’s been almost a year or two since I’ve known her. I wouldn’t say we are kindred spirits but I think it’s pretty close. Though our personalities are complete opposites, we share the love of New York, photography, blogging and other creative projects. She is a generous soul who is willing to share her time and her blog with me.

There are many, many more bloggers to add to the list but I think I’ll leave it at eight. Please visit Frances at my blog in which she is guesting for this week and check out who she picks.

Things to love about my city

Hello Readers, this is Lissa and this will be my blog for the week of February 14 through 20 for an experiment called the 7 Blog Exchange Experiment. The first topic is “things to love about your city.”

I live in New York for almost all my life and yet I am not quite a New Yorker. Sometimes I feel I’m more of a tourist. I still keep finding new things to look at every day. So here are some of my favorite things about New York, with photos, of cause. Click on the image for larger views.

The Parks

There are so many, many beautiful parks in New York. I’ve only visited a few and hope to expand the list. My two favorite parks are below.
