  • some great new blogs to visit via the blogroll
  • 31 lists in 31 days
  • a sense of accomplishment
  • a way to jumpstart my creative writing blog - I’m doing April NaBloPoMo there.

I rented and watched The Mist this week.  It’s based on a novella of the same name by Stephen King, which I read years ago.  As the years rolled by I kept wondering when it would finally hit the big screen.

The movie was super scary with great special effects and good casting.  Is it the one I would have made? No.  But that’s okay because these things rarely play out the way you would so them.

Watching the movie got me to thinking about how many King books I’ve read over the years.  And I thought to myself; “Well here’s another NaBloPoMo list.”

  • Carrie
  • Cujo
  • The Tommyknockers
  • Pet Sematary
  • Firestarter
  • The Dark Half
  • Thinner (as Richard Bachman)
  • Needful Things (my favorite King movie)
  • It
  • The Green Mile (this one was just like seeing the book come to life)
  • Christine
  • The Stand
  • Skeleton Crew
  • Rose Madder
  • Misery
  • Silver Bullet
  • The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
  • Night Shift
  • On Writing (excellent)
  • From a Buick 8
  • It’s not a good idea to go to bed with wet hair.  You’ll wake up with  some interesting configurations.
  • You can get in big trouble offering someone your seat on the bus.  An old man nearly took my head off.  Seems the world is full of awful people who are treating him like he’s old.  He was 80 if he was a day.  Sorreeeeeeeee.
  • I’d rather rent the movie that was released to the theatres than the one with extra footage or a new ending.  It can make it difficult to discuss the movie with people who saw it in the theatre.
  • Reading the calorie info on my favorite snacks can be scary.
  • I can not buy laundry detergent unless it is on sale.   I’d rather beat the clothes on a rock by the river.

  • Men are 6 times more likely to be struck by lightning than women.
  • There are 86,400 seconds in day.
  • Every time you lick a stamp you gain 1/10 of a calorie.
  • Hershey’s Kisses are called that because the machine that makes them looks like it’s kissing the conveyor belt.
  • If you add up the numbers 1-100 consecutively (1+2+3+4+5 etc) the total is 5050.
  • Maine is the toothpick capital of the world.
  • Great Britain was the first county to issue postage stamps. Hence, the postage stamps of Britain are the only stamps in the world not to bear the name of the country of origin.
  • The first hard drive available for the Apple  had a capacity of 5 megabytes.
  • Every minute in the U.S 6 people turn 17.
  • I would never have to do a bit of laundry or housework again.
  • Dieting wouldn’t be necessary, because I could eat whatever whenever with no consequences.
  • There would be those “beam me up” things like on Star Trek all over the place, so travel would be hassle free.
  • My laptop would weigh ounces, so I could carry it wherever I go.
  • Of course since my laptop would be with me then wireless would be available everywhere for free
  • There wouldn’t be any beauty contests
  • Children and the elderly would not be abused.
  • Neither would animals.
  • There wouldn’t be any military because war would not exist
  • There wouldn’t be any homeless because there would be lots of affordable housing
  • Music would play all the time so we could all dance in the streets

Actually it’s only 11 things, but that’s more than enough for now.

1.)  achieve enlightenment
2.)  connect with the members of my blogging group everyday
3.)  lose 40 pounds by June 2008
4.)  take a digital photography class
5.)  de-clutter my apartment
6.)  scan all my old photographs
7.)  do Script Frenzy
8.)  organize a book group
9.)  learn to ride a bike
10.) learn to sew
11.) give out 1000 cheers

my 43things page

As you may know recently I acquired a Sidekick ID.  You may also know a rotten teen-ager young man made a remark about my being a little old for it.  That got my Irish up way high.

So this is a list of what I can do with my ID so far.

  • Email from it with my own tmail account.
  • Browse the Internet - I keep track of my Bloglines and all my blogs thoughout the day.
  • Send text messages
  • IM if I wish - I actually don’t wish, but I know how if I need/want to send one.
  • Store pics in the album area - even though this model does not have a camera you can email fav pictures as attachments
  • Make To Do lists & Notes
  • I can even make a phone call ;)

Waving at you from New York Sidekick in hand,

Frances

  • laptop
  • phone
  • camera battery
  • my hair - trying to keep the bay at grey
  • my body - took my multi-vitamins, chromium, Vitamin C with rosehips & glucosamine chondroitin

Everyone have a wonderful Sunday

Tomorrow I’ll be on my own; hubby spends the entire day in church.

So far I’ve planned the following:

  • try to sleep late - it’s not so easy anymore
  • henna my hair - looking forward to it being fiery auburn again
  • facial - mud pack & moisturizer
  • hot bubble bath
  • watch the movie of my choice - better get to Blockbuster tonight
  • e-mail & blogging
  • call up assorted friends to wish them a good holiday & maybe gossip just a bit ;)
  • go through the mail - it’s piled up like crazy
  • dinner will probably be with best galpal who is also solo this holiday

Laundry and hosuework can wait till Monday morning.

  •  Woke up early because of a nightmare - I dreamt I lost my handbag, and no one would help me.  Then I wanted to call my credit card companies, but couldn’t remember any of my information.
  • Watched the The Darjelling Limited - after a year of not talking three brothers take a luxury train trip across India to find themselves and reunite as a family.  It’s a comedy and drama.  The brothers are played by Owen Wilson, Adrian Brody and Jason Schwartzman - need I say more?  I could watch that very last scene over and over again.
  • Gave some support to a friend - lately everything he touches or gets involved in goes sour.
  • Had an amazing vegetable salad for lunch - lots of crunch and good for you goodness.

I’m off to bloghop.

 Everyone have a peaceful weekend.

which is LETTERS.

  • In the days before the World Wide Web, yes Virginia there was really such a time, I was quite the letter writer.  AtI wrote at least once a day to a Marine stationed in Okinawa.  By the end of the first year he needed a separate suitcase to hold all my letters and cards.  None of those will be posted here, but you will see some to person(s) both past and present in my life.
  • There’s about a billion photo ops available here in New York of incredible letters.  The camera is on charge already.
  • There are lots of books of letters that I can review.
  • Photoshop has lots of fonts and colors available, so I can make a gazillion graphics to post.

Can’t wait till the 1st.

  • Every elementary, middle and high school would have a free afterschool program.  This way kids wouldn’t be home alone, or hanging out on street corners while parents were at work.  The kids would have access to computers and sports equipment, as well as tutoring.
  • All higher education would be free.
  • It would be required that every kid graduating high school be able to pass a basic math test without the use of a calculator.  Basic math = being able to add several three and four digit numbers, knowing how to balance a checkbook and make change.
  • Libraries would have extended hours and be open seven days a week.
  • Every newspaper would have a good news page.
  • Kids would admire teachers as much as they do sports heroes.
  • AIDS medications and all birth control products would be totally free.
  • Credit card companies wouldn’t be allowed on college campuses - too many kids ending up in debt and/or becoming adults in debt.
  • People running for office would have limits on how much could be spent on their campaigns.
  • Children would begin learning a second language in first grade.

Making this list made me want a big glass of chocolate milk.

  • Dragnet-  One of my all-time favorites.  Poker face Joe Friday and Bill Gannon were total opposites in perfect sync with each other.  I lovde the show’s opening when Joe tells us the weather in LA, and what department he’s working today.  The ending are great too, since you get to hear the outcomes of the trials.
  • The Original Honeymooners - It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen those episodes; I laugh like it is the first.
  • I Love Lucy - When Lucy said, ”I’ve got an idea,” anything could happen.
  • Batman - With the real Batman - Adam West.
  • All In The Family - especially the episodes from the early years.  I had a friend who used to tease me that I told stories like Edith Bunker.
  • Maude - Remember “God will get you for that Walter.” ?  I used to love the inevitable door slamming in each episode.
  • Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom with good ole Marlon Perkins.  Bonus - It looks like it’s back on the air after all these years.  Check the link for info.
  • The Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights.
  • The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour - The skits were so great, and Cher used to dis Sonny so bad n the opening every week.
  • The Mary Tyler Moore Show - Ted Baxter & Georgette. Lou Grant with his ever present bottle of scotch. Rhoda & Phyllis.
  • As I get older I find myself getting in touch with my Irish side more and more.
  • Since I don’t know my mother’s date of birth, this is the day I celebrate as her birthday.  When I’m ready I’ll do the research to find out the actual information.
  • Irish culture is fascinating - look into it - you’ll see.
  • Corned Beef, Cabbage & a pint - nothing better.
  • Bagpipes, sword & clog dancing
  • Irish Bars - they’re the best 365 days a year!

Friday morning was not great.  By noon I wanted to rewind the tape till I was back in bed again. The pity party was just about to begin.

That’s when I said to myself, “Self sit down and blog about what’s good in your life.”

  • My daughter and son-in-law are well and happy.  They’re going to be celebrating  4 years of marriage soon.
  • A few really great friends.
  • The bestest blogbuddies ever

  • Ganesh keychain with brass bells
  • sandalwood So’ham necklace

No wonder this thing feels so heavy.

  • Head Cashier - Dad had a small supermarket.  I was a cashier before age twelve.  In those days you figured out the tax and change yourself.  Now what happens when the cashier forgets to press the button that figures the change?  A manager has to come with a calculator.
  • Income  Tax Preparer - I worked one season for a major company - never again.  Tried it from home for a while, but folks make you crazy with phone calls, so I gave it up.
  • Saleslady - I’ve sold it all: Fuller Brushes, costume jewelry, vitamins and health products, ad space, booths at exhibitions, custom-made business fixtures and electronics.
  • Secretary - Our floppy disks were actually floppy.
  • pens and notebooks  - There is always a notebook and pen in my bag.
  • t-shirts/t-tops - No buttons, zips or fuss - great with capris, jeans and skirts.
  • books - My current favorites are books on blogging, writing and self-improvement.
  • a day in Atlantic City - I love to get on the bus and head for the bright lights and card tables.
  • web addresses - It’s an addiction.   Sometimes I wonder if I will ever use them all.
  • cellular phones - Last count - seven.
  • socks - There’s nothing like new ones.  Right now I am very into the Timberland brand - very cushy.
  • bath products - Bubble bath and salts, bars and bottles of scented soap, loofahs and splash.
  • pocketbooks - Just call me a New York bag lady.   My current favorite is a medium size black satchel style that I got at an amazing Kenneth Cole sale.

As I look this list over I see ideas for a few more.

My grey cells are working overtime to meet the challenge of NaBloPoMo March ‘08.

I’m lovin’ it.

I spent my teen age years sitting in New York’s retro houses watching old classic films.  Hitch’s were among my favorites.  Whenever I saw one I imagined having tea and chatting with the Master of Suspense.

Alfred Hitchcock died on April 29th 1980.  I was 18, standing in the juice section of my dad’s grocery store, when the announcement came over the radio.  Such a sense of loss, the possibiliy of tea with Hitch gone.

from my week

Juno (2007) - now playing in local theaters  -  Diablo Cody’s screenplay is as wild as the dress she wore to the Oscars.  Ellen Page delivers snappy repartee at rapid fire speeds.  Highly recommended.

Fat Girls (2006) - It’s obvious that director Ash Christian is a fan of John Waters.  Two high school students, who are best friends, are searching for boy friends.  he’s a closeted homosexual, and she is quite overweight.  Interesting.

Entenmann’s Holiday Golden Cupcakes - A holiday isn’t a holiday for me without them.  The St. Paddy’s Day variety are currently available.

Noxema 60 second Cleansing Whip - Slather some on your face while soaking in a hot bath.

Queen Helene Mud Masque - A real old-fashioned mud mask that gives your skin a lift.

Starbucks Skinny Lattes - Even the decaf ones are good.

Life is a moderately good play with a badly written third act.
Truman Capote (1924 - 1984)

Happiness isn’t something you experience; it’s something you remember.
Oscar Levant (1906 - 1972)

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing.
Agatha Christie (1890 - 1976)

It is a good rule in life never to apologize. The right sort of people do not want apologies, and the wrong sort take a mean advantage of them.
P. G. Wodehouse (1881 - 1975), The Man Upstairs (1914)

The reason grandparents and grandchildren get along so well is that they have a common enemy.
Sam Levenson (1911 - 1980)

The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.
Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 - 1968), “Strength to Love”

Monday stressed me out, so I spent yesterday doing things I really like.

  • took a long leisurely bath and gave myself a facial
  • ordered five new spring/summer shirts from one of my favorite catalogues
  • had a healthy & delicious lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant I’d never been to before
  • walked in the rain all the way from Chelsea to the Lower East Side
  • stopped in at a very Italiano coffeebar On Houston Street to sip ginger-ale and write
  • yakked on cell phone with galpals
  • Twittered
  • walked from The Lower East Side to Penn Station
  • managed to get a pic for Wordless Wednesday even though it was pretty grey out
  • came home, read email & blogged

Laura did this at her blog, and since I had a whole headful…

  • Miss Teen-age Thing you’re wearing sandals and a mini with your parka and scarf.  Feeling a bit of draft yet?
  • The sign says “No Cellphones.”  So why has the bus driver been talking on his wireless headset for the last 10 minutes?
  • Oblivious mama your kid has been kicking that glass show case with his boots for quite a while now.  I know choosing right shade of lipstick is very important.  Maybe you could let us all know his blood type for when the paramedics arrive.
  • How come I never see any baby pigeons?
  • Who figured out yeast would make bread rise?
  • And how did they figure out wheat would make flour to make the bread?   Did someone just say, “Hey let’s grind that stuff up with flat rocks, add water and see what happens?”
  • Wouldn’t it be cool to be at the gym and have every single member show up at once?
  • I wonder if I would want to date me if I were a guy?
  • comfy shoes - Attractive footwear is not one of my trademarks! I wear sneakers, clogs and my beloved Crocs.
  • overalls - No belt, lots of pockets and the bib part gives you a place to rest your hands.
  • babies - I go goo goo gah gah stupid.
  • dining out - Gotta start frequenting healthier places cause the scales are climbing.
  • photostrolling - Me and my camera out for a walk - bliss.
  • My Blog Buddies - You guys are the best
  • my laptop - When I open it up it’s like I am entering my own private little world.
  • yakking on the cell phone with my best pals - yay free nites and weekend
  • blogging - a no-brainer.
  • park benches - great places to read, write and observe.
  • Someone owes you money and start a fight over a trivial matter.  Does being mad mean you no longer have to pay me back?
  • Parents who choose to have children’s birthday parties at totally unsuitable restaurants.  Ever try to listen to a friend’s troubles while two year olds crawl around under your table?  Not easy.  The parents are perfectly happy because the place makes a great mojito.
  • Supermarket Sheriffs  These are the folks who count everyone’s items in the express checkout at the supermarket.  Their whole day is made when they can loudly announce that someone is trying to get away with 11 items in a 10 item lane.
  • People who must stand right by the subway doors for 15 stops, even though the car is nearly empty.  You practically have to fight your way onto the train.
  • Bus and cab drivers who talk on their cell phones while driving.  When I’m onboard they end that call.
  • Customer service people who tell you anything to get you off the line.
  • No Internet service  Just seeing that written on the screen is irritating.

Guess you can tell a few of those happened this week right?

Tomorrow’s list will be a bit cheerier I promise.

  • finished writing the trio of short plays I have outlined
  • produce, direct and star in that same trio of short plays
  • finally taken a trip on an airplane
  • learned to use a sewing machine
  • self-published a book of my New York photos
  • learned to ride a bicycle
  • read quite a few of the classics
  • founded a women’s consciousness raising group
  • made at least one short film
  • created a free seminar about blogging for women

I’ll be fifty in December, 2011.

Happy 1st of the month everyone.

This is the first of the 31 lists I will be doing during NaBloPoMo March ‘08.
